The Basics of Chess
Chess is a popular and challenging board game that has been played for centuries. It requires skill, strategy, and critical thinking to outwit your opponent and capture their king. In this section, we will cover the basics of how to play chess, including the rules, setup, and movements of the pieces.
Rules of Chess
The game of chess is played on an 8×8 checkered board with alternating dark and light squares. Each player starts with 16 pieces, consisting of one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The ultimate goal of the game is to capture your opponent´s king, also known as checkmate, which results in a victory.
Players take turns moving their pieces according to specific rules. The king can move one space in any direction, while the queen can move in a straight line in any direction. The rooks can move horizontally or vertically, the bishops can move diagonally, and the knights can move in an L-shaped pattern. Pawns can only move forward one square at a time, except on their first move, where they have the option to move two squares forward.
Players must adhere to the “touch-move” rule, meaning if you touch a piece, you must move it if it is a legal move. Also, no piece can move through or land on a square already occupied by their own piece. If a piece lands on a square occupied by an opponent´s piece, that piece is captured and removed from the board.
Setup of the Board
The chessboard should be positioned so that a white square is always in the bottom-right corner. Each player starts with their pieces on the first two rows, with pawns on the second row and other pieces on the first row. The queen always starts on a square that matches her color (white queen on a white square, black queen on a black square), while the king starts on the remaining square of the same color.
The bishops start next to the king and queen, followed by the knights, and finally, the rooks on the corners of the board. Pawns are placed on the second row in front of the other pieces. The setup should look like a mirror image for both players, with the queen on her color and the rooks on the corners.
Movements of the Pieces
Each type of piece has a unique way of moving across the board. The queen, as mentioned, can move in any straight line. This includes horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, allowing her to cover significant portions of the board.
The rooks can only move horizontally or vertically, but they can move as far as they want in a straight line. This makes them excellent for controlling open files and ranks on the board.
The bishop can only move diagonally, but again, they can move as far as they want in a straight line. This makes them useful for controlling the center of the board and attacking the opponent´s pieces from a distance.
The knight moves in an L-shaped pattern, two squares horizontally or vertically, followed by one square perpendicular to that movement. They are the only piece that can jump over other pieces, making them useful for unexpected and strategic moves on the board.
Finally, the pawns can only move forward one square at a time (except on their first move). However, they can capture an opponent´s piece if it is one square diagonally in front of them. In addition, if a pawn reaches the other side of the board, it can be promoted to any piece the player chooses (except a king).
